Remember when staff used never before seen moderation tools to thanos snap a blog and all its posts from existence, including reblogs, for insinuating a staff member may be a terf? And then never used that tool again to deal with the nazis and terfs and other hate groups infesting the place? Hmm <3

Remember when they introduced Blaze, promised that all submissions were moderated by staff members, then straight up Blazed people's suicide notes and hate speech?

I think it's partially a side effect of spewing hate on a secondary account so their main one isn't at risk of getting banned, but it is pretty funny and sad how 9 times out of 10 when you click a transphobe's account (to block them) you can look at their posts and it turns out... This is all they do. They just hate.

You never click their blog and it goes like Zelda fanart, some cool song, cute cats, I hate trans people, some reblogged joke about "what do you call an armadillo who wants to be a deer?", gifset from yellow jackets.

Nope. Just hate. Everything they post or reblog is about their hate.

And they're either doing a secondary account for hate-only, or even worse: this is their only hobby. This is what they're here for. This is all they're here for.

It's a little funny, and a lot sad.

if you're trans, and you're wondering what's up with transphobes, try to understand that they spend more time out of every day being upset about your dysphoria than you do.

i've never understood why it's like this, but it's like that with homophobes too. they spend so much more time thinking and talking about gay sex than even very horny gay people do.

So I think the best strat here is for the users who did get the new layout to just stop using the desktop version of the site for a while, like a week or a month or however long their 'experiment' is supposed to last, while the users who didn't get the new layout should keep using the desktop version like normal or, perhaps, use it even more than usual.

My guess is that they're doing basic A/B testing on the new layout to see if it would boost engagement: the userbase is split roughly 50/50 between the 2 versions and they are going to be comparing the engagement data between the 2 groups of users to see if it's worth it switching everyone to the new layout or not.

Basically, if you got the new layout and don't like it - don't use it. If engagement metrics of group B (new layout) are lower than those of group A (no change), the experiment will be considered a failure and they will have to reverse the change.

If your tumblr suddenly looks like twitter - it's a sign to log off and go touch some grass! (or just use the mobile app since that engagement data isn't relevant to this particular experiment)

Don't just not use it, send feedback too!

There's a "contact us" option to send feedback about features being launched. GIVE FEEDBACK IN THE APPROPRIATE SPACE!

Not to "As a professional UX researcher" on this thread, but yeah, as a professional UX researcher, now is the exact time to provide clear (but kind!! the poor UX team is usually not responsible for these decisions) feedback on what your thoughts are in regards to this change.

In my job, if I were doing an AB test on a site layout and every person I interviewed said "I hate it, it looks like knockoff twitter, please put the old one back" then I would be very excited to include a nice little bullet point in my report that says "[x] number of participants disliked the new layout :)"

@staff openly tagging face selfies of trans women as sexual content after you already lost ONE lawsuit over queerphobic moderation is quite a fucking move

(OP i hope its cool to answer smthn i saw ic here) for @pobopolybius and anyone else curious to what is being referred to

It's not even just selfies. A popular post joking about about trans girl experiences got tagged as mature content, and to test somebody made the exact same post and replaced the mention of trans women with men and despite people reporting it, it has remained unamarked

Lawsuit (linked here) required tumblr to:

  • Train all employees (including subcontractors) on New York City Human Rights Law and unconscious bias, with a focus on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Have humans review user appeals on adult content. Previously they only had humans review post-removal appeals
  • Revise the language used in appeal process for users
  • Search random sample of previously filed appeals for terms involving sexual orientation and gender identity to identify bias and retrain AI image classifier
  • Hire an expert in image classification to remove algorithmic bias around sexual orientation and gender identity and train employees on addressing image classification bias.
  • Have an image classification expert complete a evaluation on bias in moderation and steps taken to address it.
  • Search filed appeals after new review process in place for terms involving sexual orientation and gender identity to identify bias. Monthly reports of bias will be sent to New York City's Commission on Human Rights for 18 months.

Would be very interested to see these reports on bias as clearly it has not worked!

They also terminated someone's blog that she had for ten years for disputing the report by walking through all the community guidelines that she did not break. They claimed it was a mistake and would be unflagged and instead

1. Her account was terminated

2. The post remains flagged

This isn't a glitch. This isn't a coincidence. This is targeted harrassment.

FYI if your employer does this, if they have done it for a long time especially, you and your coworkers could be owed huge amounts of unpaid wages and it would be an easy suit if there is a paper trail like this and your employer is placing strict requirements on your behavior while not at work. Employment lawyers generally work on contingency. Just food for thought.
